  • Develop their understanding of number operations and the relationship between them including inverses (2/Ma2/3a)
  • Work out what they need to add to any two-digit number to make 100, then add or subtract any pair of
    two-digit numbers (2/Ma2/3e)

Using and applying mathematics

  • Break down a complex calculation into simpler steps before attempting a solution (2/Ma2/1b)
  • Make mental estimates of the answers to calculations (2/Ma2/1e)

  • two large solid counters for each pupil (these should be stuck to each pupil's Pattern grid 2 using reusable sticky-tac, prior to the assessment. They should cover up a middle number and a far right number in the same row, but a different row should be used for each pupil)
  • reusable sticky-tac
  • two transparent counters for each pupil [if transparent counters are not available, a possible alternative is small pieces of overhead transparency sheet each marked with a circle.]
  • a pen or pencil for each pupil
  • a sheet of plain paper for each pupil.
