Know where you are and what you want to achieve

Write descriptions of the progress and attainment of pupils at your school that is:

  • in line with their abilities and/or national expectations
  • falling short of national expectations and their own abilities
  • exceeding national expectations or their own abilities.

You can use the level description statements in the national curriculum and the expectation statements in the QCA/DfES schemes of work to help you. You need to use these in relation to your pupils’ abilities and starting points.

Then ask yourself:

  • What proportion of our pupils falls into each of these categories? 5 per cent? 25 per cent? 70 per cent?
  • Are there specific pupils or groups of pupils who fall into each category?
  • Are there certain subjects in which pupils are making less than expected progress across the school?
