Key stage 2

Key stage 2 covers children aged between 7-11 years old, in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 at school.

Assessment at key stage 2

Children will normally be 11 at the end of key stage 2, although a minority may be slightly younger or older. A typical 11-year-old will normally be working at level 4.

Children working at levels 3-5 will be assessed by the statutory key stage 2 tests. QCA provides optional tasks to support teacher assessment of children working below the level of the tests or above the level of the tests.

Progress of children during key stage 2 can be monitored using the optional years 3, 4 and 5 tests.

Statutory tests

At the end of key stage 2 children take the following tests:

  • Reading test (levels 3-5)
  • Writing test (levels 3-5)
  • Spelling test (levels 3-5)
  • Mathematics test A (levels 3-5)
  • Mathematics test B (levels 3-5)
  • Mental mathematics (levels 3-5)
  • Science test A (levels 3-5)
  • Science test B (levels 3-5)

Review procedure

By 5 July 2005 schools should have received all marked scripts together with completed marksheets giving the results achieved by each pupil in the key stage 2 English, mathematics and science tests.

The marking of pupils' tests will have been checked carefully before the papers are returned to schools. However, if a school feels that a pupil has been awarded the wrong level, a review can be requested. The guidance on requesting reviews is given in the Information for Schools (RL1) document, which schools should have received by 5 July 2005. A copy of the booklet can be downloaded from this site (please see downloads).

Requests for reviews should follow the procedures set out in the Information for Schools documents. This includes clearly identifying where the mark scheme has not been followed accurately in a question or questions. Reviews will not be discussed over the telephone.

All requests for reviews of marking must be submitted by 15 July 2005.
