Raising standards of performance in PESS
A key objective of QCA’s PESS investigation is to raise pupils’ attainment in PE and improve their standards of performance in school sport. Over the past six years, most of the schools involved in the investigation have achieved this by helping their pupils to:
- develop and apply skills and techniques for different activities
- select and apply what they know and understand
- develop strength, speed, stamina and suppleness
- get involved in activities and perform for and against others
- think about what they are doing and make decisions for themselves
- take on and develop high standards in different roles and responsibilities, such as performer, leader and official.
This has involved changing approaches to teaching, learning and assessment; reviewing the use of time for PESS; developing and redeploying staff; and investing in resources, space and facilities.
The case studies section of this website includes many examples of how schools have gone about improving standards in PESS. To read some of the best stories, all of which are new to the site, download ‘How are schools improving standards of performance in PESS?’ on the right.
