Evaluating the impact of PESS

Schools involved in the QCA PESS investigation have to report back annually on the difference they have made to pupils’:

  • levels of participation in relation to the two hour aspect of the PSA target
  • achievement of the 10 high quality outcomes aspect of the PSA target
  • quality and standard of performance in PE and school sport
  • quality and standard of achievement in subjects other than PE
  • quality of behaviour
  • standards of leadership
  • involvement in healthy active lifestyles.

This is a requirement shared in part by all schools and partnerships involved in the PE, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) strategy, which report each year against targets linked to participation in PESS, the 10 high quality outcomes and the quality and standard of pupils’ performance in PE and sport.

Over the past few years it has become increasingly clear that it is not enough to simply say that a difference has been made in these areas. We need to know the extent of difference; to measure the impact that schools are making in and through PESS. We do this by asking two important questions:

  • How many pupils have you made a difference to?
  • How much of a difference has been made?

The document on the right has been designed to help schools evaluate the extent of the difference they are making in and through PESS. We hope that you will find it useful and that, in turn, it will help you to prioritise your objectives and plan how to increase the impact you have on your pupils in the next year and beyond.
