Modern foreign languages (MFL) and community languages
Modern foreign languages (MFL) lessons can provide the opportunity for new arrivals with very limited English to achieve and can therefore raise their self-esteem. Learning a language new to all members of the class places new arrivals on a more equal footing than in other subjects. New arrivals may also, in this context, be able to contribute linguistic and cultural knowledge that is of interest and benefit to all pupils.
These pages describe ways in which the teaching of MFL, including community languages, can benefit pupils newly arrived in England and how schools can maximise the opportunities offered by the subject.
