Design and technology can provide opportunities for pupils newly arrived in England to achieve and can therefore raise their self-esteem. Pupils are able to combine thought and practical skills, drawing on previous experiences as they interact, discuss and use new words in a non-threatening environment.

The guidance shows how teachers can modify, as necessary, the national curriculum programmes of study to provide pupils with relevant and appropriately challenging work at each key stage.
