Design and technology

Last updated: 28 Sep 2007

Design and technology can provide opportunities for pupils newly arrived in England to achieve and can therefore raise their self-esteem. Pupils are able to combine thought and practical skills, drawing on previous experiences as they interact, discuss and use new words in a non-threatening environment.

These pages describe ways in which the teaching of design and technology can benefit pupils newly arrived in England and how schools can maximise the opportunities offered by the subject. The guidance shows how teachers can modify, as necessary, the national curriculum programmes of study to provide pupils with relevant and appropriately challenging work at each key stage.
