Religious education (RE)
Religious education (RE) can provide valuable opportunities for pupils newly arrived in England to develop their sense of identity and belonging. RE can help newly arrived pupils to learn this at a personal level and also promote understanding about the community in which they now live. New arrivals can contribute religious and cultural knowledge that is of interest and benefit to all pupils.
These pages describe ways in which RE can benefit newly arrived pupils in England and how the school can benefit from the experiences that new arrivals bring. The guidance shows how teachers can use the principles in the national curriculum inclusion statement to modify, as necessary, the curriculum to provide pupils with relevant and appropriately challenging work.
