English provides valuable opportunities for newly arrived pupils to acknowledge and reflect upon their experiences and to develop their understanding of their world through the books they read and through their own writing whilst learning to make and shape meaning in a new language. The English programmes of study encompass work in drama and with media texts, both of which offer rich resources for building on and extending pupils’ experiences in English.
