Whole-school issues
Schools that ensure the effective inclusion of new arrivals develop strategies that impact on all aspects of school life. In this way new arrivals access the curriculum quickly and achieve their full potential. Developing support for new arrivals from overseas is a whole school issue.
The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a general duty on schools, educational institutions and local education authorities to promote race equality. The statutory inclusion statement of the national curriculum for England provides a clear framework for supporting the achievement of all pupils, including minority ethnic pupils.
This area of the site provides guidance and case studies on key areas of whole school practice:
The Admission and induction practices of schools can help pupils settle and become effective learners in a short space of time.
Communication with parents and the involvement of parents and community is an essential part of effective school practice.
The particular needs of 14-16 year old new arrivals can present additional challenges to schools. It is important that students arriving during key stage 4 experience success, securing pathways to academic and vocational courses at sixth form and FE.
