Schemes of work: key stage 2
The QCA/DfES scheme of work for key stage 2 modern foreign languages illustrates how the QCA non-statutory guidelines for MFL at key stage 2 can be translated into practical plans. There is a Teacher's guide and 12 units of work for French, German and Spanish. The suggested sequences of activities help children build on previous knowledge and understanding and develop their skills.
The scheme of work can be ordered from QCA Orderline. The order reference numbers are:
- French units 1-12, together with Teacher's guide, QCA/00/607
- German units 1-12, QCA/04/1284
- Spanish units 1-12, QCA/04/1259
The French, German and Spanish units are also available on the DfES standards website (see the right-hand menu). The Teacher's guide is published on this site, but not as a single document.
Schemes of work: key stage 3
All secondary schools should have a copy of the QCA/DfES scheme of work for French. The schemes of work for German and Spanish and additional copies of the scheme of work for French can be ordered from QCA Orderline. All three schemes of work are also available via the DfES standards website (see the right-hand menu).
Use of the schemes of work is optional. Teachers may use as little or as much of them as they wish and may find it helpful to adapt the suggested activities.
