Subject criteria, which provide the framework within which awarding bodies create the detail of a specification, have been revised following the review of the national curriculum. The criteria provide a template against which the regulatory authorities consider draft specifications submitted by awarding bodies for accreditation.

Broader criteria have been developed to improve quality and coherence within and across all qualifications. These will apply to all GCSE qualifications, whether or not they are governed by subject criteria.
