Good practice example 8: Parent support (1)
A school with a high percentage of African-Caribbean pupils organised a targeted parents evening. African-Caribbean parents were invited to come to a special evening where the headteacher and external speakers outlined the school’s commitment to race equality and the practical things it does to promote it. Parents discussed, in small groups, the practical steps they can take to support the school’s endeavours. Teachers explained how parents can use the homework book, encourage home reading and liaise with classroom teachers. As well as giving parents a strong message from the top, the event enabled parents to network with each other and raise their own concerns. The evening was so successful that parents asked if similar events could be organised regularly, at least once a year.
