Good practice example 3: Drawing on areas of interest to all ethnic groups
A group of pupils from a variety of ethnic backgrounds formed a rap group called ‘The Word’. In close collaboration with their teacher, they organised over 20 performances in their own and other local schools. Their lyrics address issues of discrimination, racism in sport and society, bullying, world faiths and the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse. As well as the skills gained from marketing themselves and organising events, the young people’s peers and audiences are encouraged to challenge their own stereotypes, think about the positive aspects of hip-hop, and experience how it can be used to deliver important messages.
