Good practice example 2: Recognising diversity within the curriculum
In a school with a high percentage of minority ethnic pupils, a focus group for black and minority ethnic pupils has provided a forum for them to express views on all areas of school life. Pupils meet once every half-term and a teacher of their choice chairs the discussion. The results of a targeted questionnaire have encouraged curriculum teams to develop a more inclusive curriculum. The focus group provides the school with a forum for gathering ideas and suggestions on how its teaching, learning and ethos could be improved. As well as feeling listened to, these pupils have gained useful experience of consultation processes, questionnaire analysis and influencing decision-makers.
