Assessing progress in science: INSET toolkits

In consultation with teachers and education partners, QCA is now publishing a flexible professional development solution to enhance teaching skills in science at key stages 1, 2 and 3.

KS3 Inset toolkit

Who is it for?
A suite of three multimedia toolkits (one for each key stage) has been specifically designed to develop teachers' understanding of the assessment for learning principles and to enhance the use of QCA's Assessing Progress in Science teacher support materials.

What is in the box?
Each toolkit consists of a detailed facilitator's guide, participant's booklets and a multimedia CD-ROM featuring extensive classroom video footage and support materials.
Electronic copies of the Assessing Progress in Science teacher support materials are included on the CD-ROM in each toolkit. To give teachers even greater flexibility, we are pleased to offer printed sets of the Assessing Progress in Science materials, three for the price of two when purchased with an INSET toolkit.

INSET toolkit

How does it work?
The materials in each toolkit are split into four modules, each comprising a set of presentation slides with notes and commentary supported by video evidence and matching participants' materials. The toolkits are reusable. Electronic copies of the participants' materials are included on the CD-ROM and can be reprinted as required, providing unlimited training sessions.

  • Module 1: Introduction
Through active engagement with an Assessing Progress in Science activity, participants are introduced to the model of formative assessment upon which the resource is based
  • Module 2: Scientific Enquiry
Through a linked set of tasks, participants explore evidence of pupil performance in the area of scientific enquiry and discover how the Assessing Progress in Science materials can support assessment in this area.
  • Module 3: Drawing Out Ideas
Video evidence is presented, showing a variety of techniques for establishing the ideas and understanding that pupils bring to science activities. These are reviewed in the suggested tasks for participants.
  • Module 4: Planning and Negotiating Next Steps
Through tasks and video evidence, participants are able to investigate ways in which teachers can take forward their pupils' understanding of science topics.
