Inclusion: History Curriculum

Schools must provide a history curriculum that meets the needs of all pupils. QCA has published a range of materials to help history teachers meet these needs. Parents may also find some of the material on these sites helpful. Help provided specifically for parents can be found at the ParentsCentre website.

The needs of all learners should be met, including learners:

  • with severe learning difficulties
  • who are gifted and talented
  • for whom English may be an additional language
  • with physical disabilities
  • with different cultural or religious experiences
  • of both sexes and from all social groups
  • with multiple difficulties.

Guidance on teaching history to gifted and talented pupils

The ‘Guidance on teaching the gifted and talented’ pages on the National curriculum online website include sections on identifying gifted and talented pupils, inclusion issues and teaching gifted pupils. It provides examples of units of work, activities beyond the classroom, resources, and monitoring and evaluation.

Guidance on teaching history to pupils with learning difficulties

The ‘Responding to pupils’ needs when teaching history’ pages on the National curriculum online website have advice on how to adapt work for pupils with learning difficulties who may not progress beyond national curriculum levels 1 or 2.

Respect for all

The ‘Respect for all’ section of the QCA website provides examples of history teaching that challenges racism and shows pupils how to value diversity. Guidance has recently been added on teaching pupils who are newly arrived in this country.
