Curriculum 2000: History
The QCA schemes of work for History at Y2 are units 4, 5 and 17. Unit 3 can be used in either Y2 or Y1.
The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 4. Why do we remember Florence Nightingale?
Children should learn: to identify some reasons for her actions
Writing activity identified in the unit: Divide the children into groups. Give each group five or six statements about things Florence Nightingale did to improve life for nurses and soldiers in the hospital at Scutari. Ask them to select the three statements they think are the most important and …to consider why Florence Nightingale made these changes. Give them a picture of her with a speech bubble containing a sentence stem ending with 'because...'. Ask the children to complete the sentence by giving reasons for the changes. |

Unit 5 How do we know about the Great Fire of London?
Children should learn: why the fire spread so far for so long.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Show the children pictures of typical seventeenth-century houses, churches and street scenes…Discuss with the children the reasons why the fire spread rapidly. …Ask the children to match 'heads' and 'tails' of sentences about the fire, eg 'The fire spread because...of the direction of the wind.' 'The people escaped to the churches because...these were built of stone.' 'The fire went out because... the wind stopped.'

Unit 3 What were seaside holidays like in the past?
Children should learn: to distinguish between holidays in the recent and more distant past; to sort information into categories that distinguish the present from the past; to recognise that some things change and others stay the same.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Give the children packs of photographs or pictures showing seaside holidays now and when their parents/carers and grandparents were young. Ask the children to identify and write down three things that are similar in all the photographs or pictures and three that are different. |
NLS non-fiction text focus: non-chronological reports
T19 to make simple notes from non-fiction texts eg key words and phrases, page references, headings to use in subsequent writing
T20 to write non-fiction texts, using texts read as models for own writing, eg use of headings, subheadings, captions
T21 to write non-chronological reports based on structure of known texts, eg There are two sorts of X … they live in …. The A's have x but the B's etc, using appropriate language to present …and categorise ideas
