Writing links between QCA schemes of work and NLS writing objectives

Year 6
Curriculum 2000: Geography

The QCA schemes of work for Geography at Y6 are 14 and 15.
Unit 23 is for Y5/6.
Units 16, 18, 24 and 25 can be used throughout the key stage.

The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Y6 TERM 1
QCA schemes of work: geography
NLS writing objectives
Unit 15. The mountain environment

What is a mountain environment?

Identify some important characteristics of a mountain environment.

Investigate how mountain environments are similar and different in nature across a range of places and scales.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to investigate a mountain environment, eg the Lake District, the Austrian Alps, the Himalayas. They should think about what the place is like, where it is, what the landscape is like and what people do in the area, using sources like pictures, maps, artefacts, CD-ROMs and the internet. They should make a presentation of their findings to the rest of the class.

NLS non-fiction text focus: report

T17 to write non-chronological reports linked to other subjects

Unit 23. Investigating coasts

Which area of the coastline should we visit?

Use maps and secondary sources to research and describe an area of coast suitable for a particular type of holiday.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Each group will be contributing a section to a holiday brochure that aims to outline a range of possible coastal destinations for tourists. Ask the children to research and investigate coastal environments around the UK which are relevant to their brief - encourage them to use Ordnance Survey maps, atlases, non-fiction books, internet, travel and holiday information.

Ask each group to recommend a possible destination.

Why do we need to manage the coastline?

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Discuss with the class different strategies for coastal management (eg cliff-face armouring, groynes, artificial harbours, sea walls, doing nothing) and the advantages and disadvantages of such strategies (eg prevent rock falls and cliff retreat).

NLS non-fiction text focus: persuasion/discussion

T18 to construct effective arguments:
