The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 5B. Life cycles
Children should learn: that adults have young and that these grow into adults which in turn produce young.
Talk with children about the growth and development of humans and discuss different stages eg babyhood, childhood, adolescence, adulthood.
Writing activity identified in the unit. Ask children to devise a timeline to demonstrate stages in the growth and development of humans and talk with them about the relative lengths of each stage. Use secondary sources to compare lengths of stages, eg gestation period. |

Unit 5A. Keeping healthy
Children should learn that: when humans exercise, muscles move parts of the skeleton and this activity requires an increased blood supply, so the heart beat increases and the pulse is faster.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Review previous work on skeleton, muscles and exercise by asking the children to produce an information leaflet about a form of exercise. |

Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to use secondary sources to find out about a range of gases and how they are used. Ask the children to present their findings as an information leaflet or poster. |

Children should learn: to explain everyday examples of 'drying' in terms of factors affecting evaporation.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Show pictures of appliances (eg hairdryers, tumble dryers, rotary clothes line) and ask children to explain how these help to make things 'dry' more quickly. Record explanations in writing. |
