The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 13. A contrasting UK locality - Llandudno
To understand similarities and differences between places.
Ask the children to review and begin to explain the main similarities and differences between their own locality and Llandudno. Divide the children into small groups and allocate a different theme to each group eg land use, economic activity, buildings.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Produce a class book about Llandudno that can be shared with other classes in the school. |

Unit 23. Investigating coasts
How does human activity affect coastal environments?
Introduce the idea that human activity can also cause erosion of the coastline. Discuss with the children how building on a cliff can increase the likelihood of cliff instability and slope failure.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to produce a newspaper report using ICT, based on the Holbeck Hotel or similar incident, using information and sources from non-fiction books, atlases, newspapers and the internet. |

Unit 12. Should the High Street be closed to traffic?
How might the issue be resolved? Divide the class into groups and allocate a range of roles to each, eg a shopkeeper, a young parent, a delivery driver. Ask each group to debate the issue of traffic on the high street and try to arrive at a solution.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask each group to prepare a presentation of its views on traffic on the high street. |

T16 note-making: to fillet passages for relevant information and present ideas which are effectively grouped and linked

Unit 20. Local traffic - an environmental issue
How might the issue be resolved? Divide the children into small groups and ask each group to analyse the data collected in the questionnaire survey.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask them to use the results of their analysis to suggest ways the issue might be resolved. They could use ICT to present their suggestions. |
