Writing links between QCA schemes of work and NLS writing objectives

Year 2
Curriculum 2000: Science

The QCA schemes of work for Science at Y2 are 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E and 2F.

The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 2E. Forces and movement

In this unit children will have opportunities to use:
words related to movement, eg direction, distance, force;
comparative expressions, eg further, furthest, fast, faster, fastest, slow, slower, slowest, higher.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Review what children know about the effects of pushes and pulls on objects by making a word list related to movements, and introduce force as a word which encompasses pushes and pulls.

NLS non-fiction text focus: alphabetically ordered texts

T20 to make class dictionaries and glossaries of special interest words giving explanations and definitions, eg linked to topics

S3 to re-read own writing to check for grammatical sense (coherence) and accuracy (agreement) - identify errors and suggest alternative constructions

S9 to secure the use of simple sentences in own writing

Unit 2F. Using electricity

In this unit children will have opportunities to:
use expressions of reason using 'because';
to explain what happened, drawing on their knowledge of circuits.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Give children examples of circuits that do not work. Ask them to make them work and describe and explain how they did this. ...Ask children to construct the circuits to test their predictions, make a record of their results and explain what happened.

NLS non-fiction text focus:
explanations

T21 to produce simple flow charts or diagrams that explain a process

S9 to secure the use of simple sentences in own writing



Y2 TERM 3

Unit 2B. Plants and animals in the local environment

Children should learn:
that there are differences between local habitats.

Writing activities identified in the unit:
Choose two contrasting areas, eg the playground, a playing field. Ask children to predict and then find out what animals and plants they can find in each. Help them to describe, using drawing and writing, differences between the two areas.

Draw together work in this unit by discussing the habitats with the children and asking them to produce an information sheet, for their parents, about these habitats and the animals and plants that are found there.

NLS non-fiction text focus: non-chronological reports

T19 to make simple notes from non-fiction texts eg key words and phrases, page references, headings to use in subsequent writing

T20 to write non-fiction texts, using texts read as models for own writing, eg use of headings, sub-headings, captions

T21 to write non-chronological reports based on structure of known texts, eg There are two sorts of X … they live in …. The A's have x but the B's etc, using appropriate language to present …and categorise ideas

S5 to write in clear sentences using capital letters and full stops accurately

Unit 2C. Variation

Children should learn:
that humans are similar to each other in some ways and different in others

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Ask children to bring in a photograph of themselves. Ask children to sort the photographs into groups using their own criteria. Ask children to write a description of a member of the class so that others can identify who it is or make and record a comparison of two individuals listing similarities and differences.
