Writing links between QCA schemes of work and NLS writing objectives
Year 1
Curriculum 2000: Geography
The QCA schemes of work for Geography at Y1 are units 1 and 2. Unit 5 can be used at either Y1 or Y2. Units 24 and 25 can be used in any year from Y1 - Y6.
The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 2. How can we make our local area safer?
Children should learn: about the character of a place
Writing activity identified in the unit: With the children's help, label a wall display of photographs of the road outside the school to show aspects related to traffic, eg.road signs, road markings. |

Unit 1. Around our school - the local area
Children should learn: to describe a route.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to draw a map of their route from home to their classroom and describe their route to a partner.

Children should learn: to recognise features of places; be aware of similarities and differences between other countries and their own.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to describe what the places Barnaby visits are like and what sort of weather he might have experienced, using the postcards and photographs received. |
NLS non-fiction text focus: non-chronological reports
T25 to assemble information from own experience, eg food, pets; to use simple sentences to describe, based on examples from reading; to write simple non-chronological reports
S5 to continue demarcating sentences in writing, ending a sentence with a full stop
S7 to use a capital letter for the personal pronoun 'I', for names and for the start of a sentence |
