The QCA schemes of work for Religious Education at Y5 are 5A, 5B, 5C and 5D.

The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 5A. Why is Muhammad important to Muslims?

Children should learn:
about the life and teachings of Muhammad.

Set an independent research task by asking the children to find out where and when the events took place… record the information on a class timeline.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Help the children make a simple story book about the life of Muhammad.

NLS non-fiction text focus: recount

T24 to write recounts based on subject, topic or personal experiences

T26 to make notes for different purposes

T27 to use simple abbreviations in note-taking

S3 to discuss, proof-read and edit own writing

S4 to adapt writing for different readers and purposes

Unit 5B. How do Muslims express their beliefs through practices?

Children should learn:
the Five Pillars of Islam.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Ask the children to design a leaflet explaining the purpose of Wudu.

Ask the children to write a newspaper or magazine article about a family going on Hajj, explaining the significance of this event for them.

NLS non-fiction text focus: explanations

T22 to plan, compose, edit and refine short non-chronological reports and explanatory texts

T21 to convert personal notes into notes for others to read

T24 to evaluate their work

S3 to understand how writing can be adapted for different audiences and purposes

Unit 5D. How do the beliefs of Christians influence their actions?

Children should learn:
How do Christians serve their neighbours?

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Drawing on the biblical and other material in his unit ask the children to write an answer to the question 'Why and how do Christians help each other?'

Unit 5C. Where did the Christian Bible come from?

Children should learn:
to identify some extracts from the Bible.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Ask the children to write about the extract they find most interesting and explain why.

Children should learn:
that Christians believe that the Bible is the word of God and that it is relevant to their lives today.

Writing activity identified in the unit::
Ask the children to write about why a Christian would read the Bible today and explain what they could learn from it using examples.

NLS non-fiction text focus:persuasion

T18 to write a commentary on an issue on paper or screen… setting out and justifying a personal view…

T19 to construct an argument in note form or full text
