The QCA schemes of work for Design and Technology at Y5 are 5A, 5B, 5C and 5D.
The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 5A. Musical instruments
Design and make a musical instrument to accompany a performance.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Encourage them to put their ideas on paper in a way which others will understand, to list materials and other resources, and to set out a proposed sequence of work.

Unit 5B. Bread
Design and make a new bread product for a specific occasion or person.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask them to draw up a simple specification identifying the type of bread product, how it might be used and the criteria for evaluation. |
