The QCA schemes of work for Design and Technology at Y4 are 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D and 4E.
The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 4B. Storybooks
Design and make a storybook that has moving parts for a particular purpose.
Writing activity identified in the unit: The children should make an outline plan with drawing or writing to show who will do each task and the order in which they intend to make the book.

Unit 4A. Money containers
Design and make a money container for themselves or someone else.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to draw up a simple design specification, eg it must be small, keep the money safe, and have compartments. Ask them to put the list of points in order with the most important ones coming first. |
