Writing links between QCA schemes of work and NLS writing objectives

Year 1
Curriculum 2000: Religious Education

The QCA schemes of work for Religious Education at Y1 are 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E and 1F.

The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Unit 1C. Celebrations: why do Christians give gifts at Christmas?

Children should learn:
that the concepts of giving and receiving are important in Christianity.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Draw together this unit by making a class display, featuring a large gift box with children's statements and drawings about gifts and giving going into it.

NLS non-fiction text focus: signs, labels, captions and lists

T14 to write captions for their own work, eg for display, in class books

T15 to make simple lists for planning, reminding

S7 to recognise that a line of writing is not necessarily the same as a sentence

S8 to begin to use full stops to demarcate sentences

S9 to use a capital letter…for the start of a sentence

NLS writing objectives
Unit 1F. What can we learn from visiting a church?

Children should learn:
to identify some of the features of a church that make it a special place for Christians;
to evaluate what they have learnt and present the information in a variety of forms.

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Follow-up activities focusing on what the children have learnt may extend over several lessons. Tasks could include: making a class book.

NLS non-fiction text focus:
non-chronological reports

T25 to assemble information from own experience, eg food, pets; to use simple sentences to describe, based on examples from reading; to write simple non-chronological reports

S5 to continue demarcating sentences in writing, ending a sentence with a full stop

S7 to use a capital letter for the personal pronoun 'I', for names and for the start of a sentence

Unit 1D. Beliefs and practice

Children should learn:
the main stories concerning religious leaders in a particular religion

Writing activity identified in the unit:
Read or tell the story of the religious leader. Make a class frieze depicting the key characters and events in the story.

NLS non-fiction text focus: recounts

T20 to write simple recounts linked to topics of interest/study or to personal experience, using the language of texts read as models for own writing. Make group/class books, eg Our day at school, Our trip to …

S5 other common uses of capitalisation, eg for personal titles, headings, book titles, emphasis

S6 through reading and writing, to reinforce knowledge of term sentence from previous terms
