The QCA schemes of work for History at Y4 are 6A, 6B, 6C, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 18.
All of these can also be used at Y3.
The mapping shown below is based on writing activities suggested in the units that directly relate to NLS non-fiction objectives. The units also offer other opportunities for purposeful writing.

Where did the Vikings finally settle in England?
Writing activity identified in the unit: Show the children a video, or read or tell the story of King Alfred. Ask the children to rewrite the story in their own words.

T24 to write newspaper style reports, eg about school events or an incident from a story, including:
- composing headlines
- using IT to draft and lay out reports
- editing stories to fit a particular space
- organising writing into paragraphs

To find out about the local area in the past from different written sources.

How different were the lives of rich and poor people?
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to summarise what they have learnt by answering the questions given. |
NLS non-fiction text focus: report
T27 to write a non-chronological report, including the use of organisational devices, eg numbered lists, headings for conciseness by:
- generalising some of the details
- deleting the least important details

Unit 18. What was it like to live here in the past?
What do pictures and photographs tell us about past life in our area?
Give the children pictures (paintings, sketches, photographs, postcards) showing how the area has changed.
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to write the instructions that may have been given to the photographer or artist who created the picture (eg make it look grander, bigger, tidier). |

Unit 6A. Why have people invaded and settled in Britain in the past? A Roman case study
Why do people move away from where they were born?
Writing activity identified in the unit: Encourage the children to suggest why they or their families moved, and list the reasons given. Help them to sort the reasons into those where families chose to move and where they had to move. |

T23 to collect information from a variety of sources and present it in one simple format, eg wall chart, labelled diagram

Unit 7. Why did Henry VIII marry six times?
Ask the children to suggest reasons why Henry married six times, (eg need for alliances, falling in love, need for power, money). Ask them to list the reasons in order of importance.
(NB This activity is at the end of the unit when children have 'investigated' each marriage)

What were the short-term and long-term results of Boudicca's revolt?
Writing activity identified in the unit: Ask the children to think about how a Celtic or Roman survivor of the revolt might feel. Provide them with a suitable sentence starter and ask them to write about the results of the revolt from the point of view of either a Celt or a Roman. |
