Managing learning (for teachers)

Last updated: 14 Nov 2008

The continuum of progression

Design and technology is part of every phase of education, from the early years foundation stage to key stage 4. Therefore, there must be a steady and continuous progression in learning. This continuum of progression must not be left to chance, it must be planned and managed carefully.

Teachers can ensure their pupils progress by:

  • planning for distinct learning styles
  • encouraging divergent and convergent thinking
  • ensuring pupils know what as well as know how
  • teaching technological concepts
  • providing opportunities to combine knowledge and understanding with intellectual and practical skills
  • providing opportunities to invent, innovate and make things happen
  • motivating pupils through success
  • using science
  • using vocabulary
  • ensuring pupils learn how to learn.
