Examples of embedding English in foundation subjects
In this section, you will find examples of why and how teachers have embedded English in foundation subjects and enhanced children's learning in these subjects.
In Fidgety Fish (year 1), the teacher used a story with a wide range of descriptive language to inspire imaginative dance work and effective speaking, listening and writing.
In Going on a bear hunt! (year 1), the teacher used a story with repeating patterns about a journey as a context for learning to use geographical vocabulary, for making simple maps and for writing poetry.
In The lost toy (year 1), the teacher used the structure of the story to provide a focus for design and technology work. It inspired the children to develop their own design ideas.
In The conflict (year 4), the teacher used drama work on a story about bullying to embed work on narrative structure and develop photographic techniques in art and design.
In Dr Barnardo (year 5), the children gained a real understanding of the Victorian era by reading novels, plays and non-fiction sources and writing a play about a leading Victorian figure in history.
In Sing the blues (year 6), the children gained an understanding of poetic language by focusing on effective song writing, including exploring how the lyrics of a song can convey mood, attitude or a story.
In The strawpion (year 6) the task of making imaginary creatures provided an opportunity for the teacher to develop a report-writing unit, which enhanced the children's knowledge and understanding of animals and their habitats in science.
