Key skills are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general. The key skill of application of number is available as a qualification at levels 1,2, 3 and 4. Assessment is through a combination of a test and a portfolio. At level 5, there is a single key skills unit in personal skills development.

The new key skills standards (previously known as specifications) are now available by subject on this website. These standards are for use with new candidates from September 2004. Candidates registered with the current key skills have until August 2006 to complete the qualifications and claim certification.
