Citizenship at work

The young people are ambassadors, promoting the council's missionDorset County Council has introduced a citizenship programme for its advanced modern apprentices (AMAs). The young people now take part in a range of citizenship activities as part of formal training sessions, experience in the workplace and one-off events.

The AMAs choose and plan most of the activities, which have included reviewing local government websites, producing a PowerPoint presentation on citizenship in their jobs and attending a conference run by the TUC. They have also taken on an ambassadorial role for the council, promoting its mission throughout the organisation and the wider community. As a result of their citizenship work, the young people have gained confidence and their communication skills have improved considerably.
