On demand basic and key skills tests

The level 1 and 2 basic and key skills tests are available flexibly from awarding bodies on an on demand basis. On demand testing offers a number of additional benefits to centres and candidates and forms the basis of the tests' availability on screen.

The on demand system

The on demand system enables centres to deliver the level1 and 2 tests for application of number / adult numeracy; communication / adult literacy and ICT at levels 1 and 2, flexibly and as required. This system has been developed so that candidates can take the tests when they are ready and so that centres can plan test sessions around the availability of candidates.

The on demand system is based on a bank of test papers which are used by awarding bodies in randomised rotation.

To assist centres with candidates preparing to take the level 1 and 2 tests, QCA is planning to make material from the bank available online for practice purposes. As soon as this material is available this page will be updated with further details.

From time to time, additional papers will be added to the bank and existing material retired from use.

Results and feedback

Centres are notified of their candidates' results within ten working days of the test being taken. Certification of successful candidates is within four weeks of the test date.

Additionally, for each adult literacy and numeracy candidate who takes a test but does not pass, feedback is provided. This links questions answered incorrectly to the literacy / numeracy skill being assessed. This is intended to support focussed planning of learning. QCA is encouraging awarding bodies to also offer this type of feedback to key skills candidates.

On screen testing

Most awarding bodies now also offer the on demand level 1 and 2 tests in on screen format. Our research has shown that many candidates prefer to take the tests in this way. An added advantage of on screen testing is that results can be given within 24 hours of a candidate sitting the test. Some awarding body systems provide instant results feedback.
