Key stage 3 Statutory requirements: Art & Design
Art and design is a national curriculum foundation subject at key stage 3. The links above contain details of key stage 3 curriculum requirements, assessment and other resources.
Key stage 3 statutory requirements
At key stage 3 it is a requirement that pupils follow the national curriculum for art and design. Art and design statutory order information is available on the National curriculum online website and requires teachers to:
- teach the full programmes of study for art and design
- respond to the statutory requirements for ICT in art and design (available on the National curriculum in action website)
- report progress in the subject each year
- report by using the level descriptions at the end of key stage 3.
It is advisory in planning that teachers refer to the 'importance statement' for art and design.
Key stage 3 schemes of work
The QCA/DfES schemes of work provide examples of how the programme of study and attainment targets can be translated into practical, manageable plans.
All secondary schools have been sent copies of the schemes of work. They are also available on DfES Standards Site or can be ordered from QCA Orderline, order reference number QCA/00/450.
Use of the scheme of work is optional. Teachers may use as little or as much of it as they wish and may find it helpful to adapt the suggested activities.
Planning, adapting and combining units
It is essential that schools consider the needs of their pupils and respond to their own strengths in planning schemes of work.
Guidance in adapting, combining and planning schemes of work can be found on the ‘Schemes of work’ section on DfES Standards site.
Key stage 3 exemplification
Numerous examples of pupils’ work in art and design at key stage 3 can be viewed on the National curriculum in action website. Each entry features commentary on the activity and details of its links with the non-statutory guidelines.
The easiest way to find examples is via the 'Search for pupils' work' tab at the top of the screen. You can then search by key stage and refine your search by a variety of options.
