Applied science

Applied science gives a young person the chance to test their commitment to a career idea. Teaching methods are different:

  • applied science offers a more practical, hands-on approach to learning. Students have more responsibility for the work they produce. At GCSE level, there are opportunities to learn outside school. At A level, there is experience of the working world.

Assessment methods are different:

  • there is greater weight on coursework at both GCSE and A level. Teachers assess their own students to a greater extent than is usual at GCSE or A level. Students should end the course with a portfolio that demonstrates how much they have learned.
