Activities beyond the classroom: RE

RE is concerned with ultimate questions and with very complex and multi-faceted phenomena and concepts, for example the nature of life and its purpose. This provides interest and motivation for many of the most able pupils. Truth-seeking in the field of religion is hard work, and should stimulate the best in the best of young minds. Pupils who are gifted in RE can quickly, at a high level, develop and apply knowledge, understanding and skills that are important in RE, such as critical thinking, interpretation, insight, reflection and synthesis. Pupils need to have the opportunity to demonstrate these. The philosophy for pupils and other initiatives may be useful in planning such opportunities.

Pupils may be encouraged to:

  • observe and reflect on current issues, events in life, seeking to understand their deeper causes, significance and implications.
  • study religious and philosophical organisations that operate at different levels in society.
  • join a philosophy club, which will allow them to consider religious and spiritual questions in exciting and extending ways.

RE can make an excellent focus for summer school activities among gifted pupils.
