Teaching talented pupils: Ways of learning
Music engages the whole range of human responses from intellect to feeling. Pupils who are gifted and talented in music are able, and need, to develop a sense of the whole. This can mislead teachers, as the pupils often find it difficult at first to separate out the parts.
The norm is for teachers to start from the parts and build to the whole. However, this approach can prevent musical giftedness and talent from being identified and developed. Instead, teachers need to give pupils the opportunity to work from the complete, back to the separate parts.
