Inclusion issues: Setting suitable learning challenges: Music
Pupils who show musical talent will need to be given opportunities to extend their musical skills by learning an instrument and/or being helped to extend their vocal techniques and skills. They should use and extend these instrumental and vocal skills through performing, composing and appraising activities, both within and beyond the classroom. This will include performing with other talented pupils in school, regionally and, where appropriate, nationally.
Pupils who show more general giftedness will need to be mentally extended in music lessons. Teachers need to give them experiences that:
challenge their ideas
enable them to analyse and compare different pieces of music, including the use of musical scores and notations
focus on specific musical genres and styles, so that an appropriate depth of understanding can be developed.
In addition, the pupils could use ICT to explore and use sounds expressively to a high level, without necessarily acquiring a comparative level of vocal or instrumental musical skill.
