Resources: Art and Design
Schools and departments need a coordinated approach to assembling study and support activities and source materials. Resources could include:
- a bank of additional activities, both short and longer term, which can be used to extend talented pupils. Teachers need to consider how and where pupils could practise technical skills and store their work safely;
- other pupils' work, either retained or colour copied. This can have a motivating effect, raising talented pupils' aspirations and providing examples of excellence;
- collections of found objects and books of reproductions of artists' work;
- materials that are not traditionally part of art and design resources, for example photography, film and video, digital media, textiles, advertising, consumer products;
- visits to galleries, museums, heritage sites and commercial outlets;
- magazines that feature contemporary work;
- internet sites for artists, craftspeople and designers, and auctions and other events;
- CD-ROMs
- computers used independently in school and at home, to provide continuity of learning and experience (including a scanner, as it supports a wide range of creative activities).
See the 'Help your child discover' website (DfES) for activities in:
All of the above help to create a visual and cultural environment for pupils that will enhance their art and design creativity and thinking, whether in lessons or beyond the classroom.
