Teaching gifted pupils: Using thinking skills

Developing pupils' ability to reflect on their own learning can help them progress. Activities in modern foreign languages can encourage pupils to reflect on their own thinking processes and language-learning strategies, including:

identifying and understanding the links between the target language and English in lexis, syntax and grammar

drawing inferences from unfamiliar language and unexpected responses

using their knowledge of grammar to deduce the meaning of new words and structures

using language creatively to express their own ideas, attitudes and opinions

adapting and revising language for their own purposes

identifying and using language patterns

devising their own language-learning strategies.
