Teaching gifted pupils: Using key skills


Pupils who are gifted in modern foreign languages benefit from enrichment and extension activities that include key skills, in particular:

communication
taking part in discussions in the target language, presenting point of views clearly, using a range of language to express their viewpoints; reading a range of authentic texts for understanding or gist and summarising the information; writing for different purposes, for example, letters, articles, questionnaires and scripts

information technology
researching and selecting relevant information from a database or the internet; presenting information using a variety of techniques, including word-processing and desktop publishing; creating websites in the target language; using presentation software to support oral presentations

working with others
working in pairs or a group; sharing ideas; planning and selecting resources and working towards a common objective or outcome for a task, for example, taking part in a group presentation in the target language, or putting together a newspaper or magazine for young people

improving own learning and performance
being involved in target setting through activities such as using reference materials to increase their understanding and improve their written work, redrafting their written work to improve accuracy and variety of expression, reading or listening independently, using a variety of strategies to understand text.
