Teaching gifted pupils: Using key skills
History provides opportunities for gifted pupils to develop the key skills of:
communication
appropriate challenge can be provided through both the range and level of difficulty of sources of information. The quality of discussion, including teacher intervention to challenge thinking, can be used to develop concepts and extend vocabulary. Presentation of findings can be enhanced by the independent choice of format and evaluation of fitness for purpose
application of number
Gifted pupils can use, for example, data-handling and reasoning skills in the context of an enquiry using a large database. Alternatively, they could set up an IT database, deciding how to organise categories to facilitate appropriate searches
information technology
IT provides gifted pupils with a wealth of sources of information and the tools for sorting, editing and presenting their findings. This could support independent enquiry, as well as enrichment of class activities
working with others
a visit to a historical site, for example, would give gifted pupils an opportunity to plan, carry out and present their findings for a particular enquiry. This could involve acting as team leader and/or team member, agreeing responsibilities and timings and, collectively, meeting deadlines
improving own learning and performance
gifted pupils can be given clear criteria against which to evaluate their work, for example a published mark scheme from an awarding body. They could then use this to set and review their own targets, presenting evidence to the teacher for moderation
problem solving
pursuing a historical enquiry gives pupils a problem to solve. Carrying out the enquiry will also develop their thinking skills.
