Coney Hill Primary School

Stimulating every child's desire to learn

Coney Hill Community Primary School is an exciting and forward thinking school committed to providing the highest standard of education for every pupil. They believe in providing an environment and curriculum which stimulates every child's desire to learn and enables them to achieve their potential. Through a creative approach, they aim to provide a primary experience that will always be remembered.

Head teacher Rachel Wadley ensures her children stay children as long as possible and aims for an innovative curriculum that is as creative as her children are:

"We like to keep learning alive through providing a stimulating learning environment. Each class has a focal learning point which is visual and dramatic, for example a rocket or tardis. We recognise that each child is an individual and the delivery of the curriculum needs to take this into account."

Her positive approach to teaching and to the curriculum is seen across the school by other members of the faculty. We also spoke to Jane Searle, a teacher at the school who feels as dedicated and motivated as Rachel to children's learning experiences.

"This is the best approach to learning that I have experienced. It is both structured and creative. I believe in choice - as a staff you should be able to decide what suits you and your children. We have ownership of our curriculum - it is hard work but better quality in the end."

The feelings of the staff translate down to the pupils with Ellie - a Year 4 pupil letting us know how much she loves her school:

"Our teachers teach us beautiful lessons here. We get to do interesting things like writing letters about toxic waste or being treated as a slave. Our teachers make our work really exciting."

Dani, the curriculum coordinator at the school echoes the positive and dedicated voice of the teaching staff with her comments

"The curriculum is everything - everything we do. We make sure it is creative and stimulating. It needs to be refreshing for both teachers and children."

The parents feel the same.

As Mandy told us, "my children think it's great to go to school and are more switched on to learning. The approach the school has is practical and keeps children interested. I wish I could go back to school and experience this."

It would seem that Coney Hill School is well on the way to finding the balance between a structured and creative curriculum that helps promote learning that lasts a lifetime. So, as a final word, headteacher Rachel tells us what she thinks the new primary curriculum should look like.

"It should be skill based with flexibility for schools to deliver these creatively in a thematic way. Schools need to respond to the needs of the local community as well as those nationally. Literacy and numeracy are paramount and we need to continue to ensure children achieve high standards in these, possibly through different assessment methods such as teacher assessment. There should also be more attention paid to transition so that learning is followed through and built on in secondary schools."
