Controlled assessments in practice
For examples of how schools piloted controlled assessments in a range of subjects, setting tasks that followed awarding body guidelines, fitted the school's circumstances and covered the GCSE assessment objectives, see the links on the left.
More about controlled assessment in GCSEs
The controlled assessment element will be introduced in GCSEs from September 2009. Controlled assessment is intended to address issues relating to task setting, taking and marking that have been raised in reviews of coursework. Awarding bodies can provide further details about controlled assessment requirements for specific GCSEs.
For an explanation of the regulatory arrangements, download GCSE controlled assessment regulations (QCA, March 2008). To find out about the process of developing controlled assessments download Controlled assessments (QCA, June 2007). The issues relating to the development of controlled assessments are described in the independent report Improving GCSE: internal and controlled assessment (March 2007).
