Helping teachers to deliver

Resources for teaching and assessment

QCA produces resources to support the teaching and assessment of science in primary schools.

Programmes of study
At key stages 1 and 2 schools must deliver the programmes of study for science. The programmes of study and level descriptions can be found on National Curriculum online.

Schemes of work
In 1998 QCA produced a scheme of work for key stages 1 and 2 designed to help teachers deliver the science programmes of study. The scheme is non-statutory and shows one way that the programmes of study can be interpreted for the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to adapt ideas from the scheme to meet pupils' needs and the priorities of their school or department.

The scheme of work can be found on the Standards website or bought from QCA orderline.

Examples of pupils' work
The National Curriculum in Action website has examples of pupils' work with commentaries explaining why the work exemplifies a particular national curriculum level. The examples come from different pupils, contexts and schools and include work relating to practical investigations and fieldwork, classroom activities and test items.

Encouraging creativity
Creativity: find it, promote it helps teachers recognise and promote creativity in the classroom. It includes examples of creativity in science.

Assessing progress in science at key stages 1 and 2
With a separate pack for each key stage, these materials are designed to help teachers assess key stage 1 and 2 pupils. It provides guidance on assessment for learning principles, on identifying pupils' strengths and weaknesses, and on providing informative feedback. Buy copies from QCA orderline.

INSET toolkit to support assessing progress in science
This toolkit has been designed to develop teachers' understanding of assessment for learning and to enhance the use of the Assessing progress in science support materials. Each toolkit consists of a detailed facilitator's guide, participants' booklets and a CD-ROM with extensive classroom video footage and support materials. Electronic copies of the Assessing progress in science materials are included on the CD-ROM in each toolkit.
