How science works
At key stage 4, science is still a compulsory programme for all students. The key stage 4 programme of study for science is based on 'how science works'. Students learn about scientific method and the way scientific knowledge changes over time. They investigate scientific ideas and theories, and learn of the evidence supporting or refuting these ideas and theories. They also develop skills in data collection, working safely and presenting scientific information.
Topics that students investigate include:
- organisms and health
- chemical and material behaviour
- energy, electricity and radiation
- environment, Earth and universe.
Most students work towards qualifications, with most taking two or more GCSEs in science subjects. Other qualifications available at key stage 4 include entry level certificates, Edexcel BTECs and OCR Nationals. More details about courses are in science qualifications.
