The primary curriculum

Allowing young people to develop knowledge, understanding and skills

Focus on the primary curriculum

QCA is committed to making teaching and learning an inspiring experience in the primary phase. Following the recent announcement to review the primary curriculum in the Children's Plan, we are delighted to be taking part in discussions on the next steps for the primary curriculum. This involves gathering evidence to find out what's happening now and what can be done to make a positive difference in the future. For a summary of the research projects we are currently involved in, or have completed, or to get involved in our evidence gathering see the Thinking Primary link on the left-side of this page.

The current primary curriculum offers pupils the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world and the skills they will need to flourish in it. They experience the excitement of learning by trying new things, learning from their mistakes and recognising their achievements. The primary curriculum helps pupils to develop the confidence they need to continue as lifelong learners.

The primary national curriculum for key stages 1 and 2 is an important statutory element of this curriculum offer.

This page also provides links to information, guidance and support that will help each school to design a unique primary curriculum that will meet the needs, interests and aspirations of their learners.

QCA uses evidence from research to inform policy decisions and to keep the curriculum under review.
