The secondary curriculum

Guidance and support for teaching at both key stages 3 and 4

The curriculum should inspire and challenge all learners and prepare them for the future. The updated national curriculum website provides a range of support and guidance to help schools develop a world-class secondary curriculum for the 21st century. You can access it from the related links section on this page.

The site helps teachers address the curriculum as a whole, linking subjects, skills and personal development together in a dynamic and integrated way. It includes resources, activities and examples of the curriculum in action to help schools develop their own, locally determined curriculum that meets the needs of their learners and communities.

The site includes the national curriculum which sets out the statutory entitlement for all students. The secondary national curriculum is an important element of this and describes some of what should be learnt by young people in key stages 3 and 4. The secondary curriculum builds on the learning achieved at key stages 1 and 2. The site includes the new programmes of study at key stages 3 and 4, for implementation from September 2008 for year 7.

In addition, material previously located on National Curriculum online and National Curriculum in Action can be found on this site.
