Handling data task 1: Making and sorting shapes

(Level 1 and level 2; for up to four pupils)

  • Part 1 - making specified shapes using interlocking cubes.
  • Part 2 - sorting shapes using two criteria on a Carroll diagram.
  • Part 3 - interpreting a completed Carroll diagram to answer questions; making further shapes that fulfil given criteria.

Handling data task 2: Domino diagrams

(Level 1 and level 2; for up to four pupils)

  • Part 1 - suggesting suitable criteria for sorting a set of dominoes.
  • Part 2 - sorting dominoes on a Venn diagram using one criterion.
  • Part 3 - sorting dominoes on a Venn diagram according to two criteria.

Handling data task 3: Dinosaur data

(Level 1 and level 2; for up to four pupils)

  • Part 1 - extracting data from a data set and comparing numerical values.
  • Part 2 - ordering weights and recording heights on a graph.
  • Part 3 - interpreting graphs.
  • Part 4 (optional) - collecting data and recording it on data cards.

  • Approach problems involving data presented in a variety of forms in order to identify what they need to do (1/Ma2/1a)
  • Approach problems flexibly, including trying alternative approaches to overcome any difficulties (2/Ma4/1b)

Handling data task 2: Domino diagrams

Assessment focus

  • Solve a relevant problem by using simple charts to sort, classify and organise information (1/Ma2/5a)
  • Solve problems involving data (2/Ma4/2a)
  • Represent and interpret discrete data using diagrams (2/Ma4/2c)

Using and applying mathematics

  • Understand a general statement and investigate whether particular cases match it (1/Ma2/1h)
  • Identify the data necessary to solve a given problem (2/Ma4/1c)
  • Explain and justify their methods and reasoning (2/Ma4/1h)

Resources

  • a set of dominoes or a copy of the Domino sheet for each pupil (ideally these should be copied onto a different coloured card for each pupil and will need to be cut up prior to the assessment)
  • HD task 2 instructions and record sheets
  • a copy of Venn diagrams 1 and 2 for each pupil (enlarged to A3)
    [Hoops may be used as an alternative to Venn diagrams 1 and 2]
  • three sheets of A4 paper, each cut into three strips lengthwise
  • a marker pen
  • reusable sticky-tac.

  • Order whole numbers (2/Ma2/2c).

Handling data

  • Solve a relevant problem by using simple lists and charts to sort, classify and organise information (1/Ma2/5a).
  • Solve problems involving data (2/Ma4/2a).
  • Interpret lists and charts (2/Ma4/2b).
  • Represent and interpret discrete data using graphs (2/Ma4/2c).

Using and applying mathematics

  • Approach problems involving data in order to identify what they need to do (1/Ma2/1a).
  • Use the correct language and vocabulary for measures (1/Ma3/1d).
  • Identify the data necessary to solve a given problem (2/Ma4/1c).

Resources

  • a set of three Dinosaur data cards for each pupil (to be copied onto card and cut out prior to assessment)
  • HD task 3 instructions and record sheets
  • a copy of Blank bar charts A, B, C and D - a different sheet for each pupil
  • a copy of Completed bar charts A, B, C and D - a different sheet for each pupil
  • (optional) four copies of Blank data cards - one sheet for each pupil
    (these sheets will only be needed if part 4 is administered)
  • a Group record sheet for the teacher
  • a pencil and several sheets of paper for each pupil (these will only be needed if part 4 is administered)
  • a colouring pencil for each pupil
  • a rubber (to correct any errors).

Use of optional part 4

Part 4 provides an opportunity for more extended work on handling data in the classroom. Performance on this part does not need to be considered when making an overall judgement about the level at which a pupil performed on the task.
