E1a: On average, is the range of competence in each of the four main areas shown by newly arrived year 7 pupils the same?

More than eight out of 10 schools in our survey say that the range of competence shown by newly arrived year 7 pupils in each of the four main areas of design and technology is not the same.

E1b: Please rank the areas of competence in order.

Subject leaders have mixed views on the range of competence shown by year 7 pupils in 'food', 'resistant-type materials' and 'textiles', although more than half feel that pupils show some competence in these areas. Competence when year 7 pupils arrive is lowest in 'electrical and mechanical components'.

E2: Does your department have enough resources to cover each of the four main areas?

At key stage 3 and key stage 4, there are some areas in which less than half the schools that responded say they have sufficient resources.
